Assault

The Love Story

The Assault in my living room. Way back when, around the year 1991, I was going to college over at Messiah College in PA. They had a tiny little arcade room, with two video games. Since I've always enjoyed a good arcade, I had to take a look. Cyberball 2072 and an odd take game I'd never seen before. Humm. I wasn't a sports fan, and I saw the rate at which people were feeding that game. Not good- at the time I was a starving college student. So I tried this Assault game. And you know, it was a pretty good game. Soon I was making it a daily ritual- walk back from dinner and pop in one quarter. 25 cents I could justify... After a few months of this I became the best person on campus, at least according to the hi-score list. I don't remember what my top score was, but I thought it was something like 860,000. (Don't hold me to that- it's been a long time.) Toward the end of the year, I could finished it on one quarter most of the time. Over an hour of play for 25 cents! The operators must have hated me. I kind of felt that they owed me, because I fixed the joysticks more than once.

I left Messiah College because of a lack of cash, which ment the end of my Assault rampage. Ever since then I had been passivly looking for this game, without success. Fast forward to 1998. Yes, seven years later I was still longing for that cool game. I learned about arcade auctions through Usenet, and to make a long story short, I bought 5 games in about 3 months. The game I really wanted was Assault. When I found it, it became my 4th game.

Ya know what? It played even better than I remembered. Aaaahhhhh.....
