The ‘early’ sound board used in both Reactor and Q*Bert was initially developed by Jim Weisz for use in Gottlieb’s pinball Machines.
POWER SOURCE
Four input voltages are required for proper operation of the Sound/Speech
Board. They are:
1. +30V DC - used for the LM379 Amplifier
2. +12V DC - used for the DAC's, the SC01A and the LM741's.
3. -12V DC - used for the DAC's and the LM741's.
4. +5V DC - used for the 6502 (CPU), the 6532 and all TTL.
The +30, +12, and -12 DC voltages are supplied to the A6J1 connector from the A7 Auxiliary Power Supply. The +5V DC originates at the A2 Power Supply.
SIGNAL SOURCE
The binary sound information originates in the A1 Control Board and is then
sent to the A3 Driver Board to be inverted. The four signals, S1, S2, S4 and
S8 go through 213, a 7404 hex inverter and are then output to the Sound/Speech
Board through connector A3J5. The Sound/Speech Board also receives a signal
from Q10 (on the Driver Board) which is part of the Lamp Circuitry, and is output
as S16 through connector A3J2.

The sound board used in Mad Planets is identical to the one used in Reactor or Q*Bert with only a few exceptions. The most glaring difference is the lack of speech support.

The ‘later’ style sound board was spec’ed out by David Thiel and implemented by Dave Bonecutter as a more advanced and scaleable sound board. It was also used in System 80b pinball machines.
David Thiel’s recollection of the ‘Bonecutter’ sound board:
"It originally used two SID chips (from Commodore). We had a working prototype when Gottlieb (Mylstar) purchasing alerted me that Commodore notified us that they would not sell SIDs to us due to their own demand so we had to fall back on General Instrument square wave chips with external filters. It was a sweet design with two 6502s, LPC voice chip (from GI), a DAC and two square wave chips. I used the voice chip for sound effects in Mach 3. This was the first and last game that I did on the new soundboard since I left Mylstar just before its release.
As for M.A.C.H. 3, Gottlieb was too cheap to buy a development system so that I could encode PCM voice samples into LPC data for the GI voice chip so I built LPC data by hand and used the chip for sound effects. We used one of the laser disc audio tracks for ambient audio (the other track had object data (hand coded))."
This sound board was utilized by Gottlieb in the following games: M.A.C.H. 3, Us vs. Them, Three Stooges, Curve Ball and the prototype Screw Loose.
