![]() Super Contra Level 1 - Super Nicaragua
Those evil commie Super Sandanistas are up to their old tricks again, and it's up to you and your dubiously acquired weapons to stop them. Shoot the first floaty pod to get a machine gun, and stick with this if you can. The next two pods contain spread gun & grenade launcher, and are probably best avoided. At the top of the first slope is a building with bomb-chuckers & snipers on the top floor - shoot the fuel can to take out the whole structure. Run down the next slope and another structure will rise from the floor. This one has gun turrets on rails, so you might like to blow them up. Next up is a tank on a lift. Jump and fire to kill the driver, then hammer the body until it explodes. Lie down (or not if you've got the spread gun) to destroy the floor turrets, then jump into the pit and shoot down the second machine gun. If you've managed to hang on to the first machine gun, your rate of fire will now be greatly increased. A large helicopter now arrives. Destroy it bit by bit, paying particular attention to the turrets. The rear ramp will lower, and bad men will jump out to attack you. After they are all dead, concentrate your fire on the blue energy core between the rotors. Now on to the Base Entrance. It's guarded by two snipers and a bomb-chucker, protected by sand bags. Kill them all, then hit the target at the top of the screen to blow open the doors. Level 2 - Commando & Conquer
Instead of Gryzor's 3D levels, we have Commando-style overhead view levels. Strangely, your gun has limited range in these stages, as do the enemy's weapons. Pick up the shell early on and use it to destroy the two tanks that roll on. You can try and save the shell for the Boss, but it's hardly worth it. Watch out for the fake isometric view on these levels : your bloke is sometimes stopped by a wall when there doesn't appear to be anything there. The Boss for this level is a tank-type thing with two turrets and an electro-death lawnmowing attachment. Shoot the two turrets (or use a shell if you're lazy), then shoot the driver in his cab. If the tank comes down to the bottom of the screen, you'll have to run around the back of it. Keep shooting at him until he gets the message and explodes. Level 3 - Jungle Book
You may have heard the expression "Can't see the wood for the trees", however on this level it's more a case of "Can't see the bad guys for the annoying foreground trees". Watch out especially for snipers lurking in the treetops. When you get to the small pond, remember that you can't jump if you're in the water : if you need to dodge bullets, you'll have to duck under the surface. Other hazards include a missile launcher, some facehuggers (they're in the trees - they're coming!) and an alien pod thing that fires red homing bullets. At the end you will find the alien Base Entrance. The central blob-thing spits out worms, so take this out first. Then, stand directly under the central head and fire up into it. You will need to jump to avoid the red homing blobs that it fires. Shoot it a bit more, and it will die screaming. Level 4 - Gigerworld
Much less nice-looking than the similar level in Gryzor, this stage is mainly populated by familiar-looking beasties that require multiple shots to kill. There's a mid-level boss to be defeated - jump onto the platform and hammer it's core before it gets a chance to do anything. Near the end are some eggs which spit out worms if you let them. The Boss is a flying Xenomorph, and is the easiest boss in the whole world, ever. Stand at the far right and shoot directly up as fast as possible. Even with the basic weapon, he will die without getting a shot off. Level 5 - Xenomorphic Domain
The last level sees a return to the overhead view style of play, unfortunately. Spidery-things are your main enemy, as well as strange mouths that suddenly appear in the ground. Use your shell to clear these out. Next up, some heads that circle around you and are in need of a good shooting. After that comes a corridor where blob-things come out of the walls to say hello. Shoot out the door at the end and enter the final chamber. First up is Smiler, the Sub-Boss. He is an elongated mouth that spits bullets at you, whilst at the same time, blob-things and spidery-things will attack. Perform radical dental surgery and Smiler will die. When he explodes, avoid the shrapnel and prepare for the final challenge. The final Boss is Head Teeth. You can kill him the 'proper' way by shooting his arms, eyes, cheeks and then his brain. Or (if you've got a couple of lives left), you can just stand on top of his brain and hammer the fire button. Since whenever you die your next life takes over in the same place, you can keep hitting him until he dies and awards you the slightly ridiculous sum of 10,000,000 points. Whilst he explodes, a little gremlin flies out and escapes, presumably for a third game in the series that sadly never appeared. The End
If you're playing the Japanese version, you now get the chance to play again at a super-hard difficulty level with no continues. On the Western version it's game over, man. |
