Here's a very recent arcade title from Japan-- LodeRunner: The Dig Fight! This is the fifth LodeRunner arcade game released (this board was new in 2000) and in addition to some amazingly fluid character animation and very sharp sound effects, this LodeRunner has a two player *simultaneous* mode. It's pretty interesting since it really changes the way the game can be played (all those spots you could get yourself screwed by being stuck in the old LodeRunner's your partner can come save you!). I can see why the game wasn't brought over to US arcades-- a single game can last a long time for a skilled player. I was feeling pretty damn cocky myself until about level 6... In that uniquely Japanese way, the game will have Japanese text for cut scenes, but then the gameplay is in English and the speech synthesis is in English. Go figure.
