Diary of Finds
This is a log of all the crap I find and bring home. Good, bad, cool, crappy, functional, broken, . . . everything. It doesn't include junk I only saw and didn't buy.
What counts as a find? In the most general terms, something you can go pick up any time you want, or that you can have by just throwing enough money at the owner cannot be counted as a find. True finds occur when fate or luck intervenes to put you in the same place at the same time as an item. If there's a chance you could miss out to the next joker, it's probably a find.
- A find must be second-hand goods.
- Something bought at a regular retail store is not a find.
- Something recieved in a trade or purchased in an auction is not a find.
- Merely seeing something is not a find; it must be indisputably in your possession first.
- Items bought from thrift stores, flea markets, and garage sales always count as finds. Almost always, anyway.
- Anything acquired through dumpster-diving or any other scavenging or salvage operation is a find.
- Something donated by a friend or relative is not a find, though something donated by a total stranger or mere casual acquaintance is a find.

Boy, it's been a long time since I've been out hunting. Finding a nice, complete copy of Intelligent Qube was pretty nice, but the video switcher is the real prize.
Before I even knew what it was, the rack-mount apparatus had me mesmerized with its 64 LEDs, 16 buttons, 32 RCA jacks and 16 BNC jacks. It certainly seemed worth the two bucks the seller was asking. Figuring out that its purpose is to route any of eight A/V inputs to any of eight outputs, and that it can be computer-controlled via serial cable made the purchase a no-brainer. It works great except for two LEDs in the lower right corner whose heads were scraped off.

- Notes
- I had picked up a $30 Saturn from K-Mart, and wanted to return Saturday's unit to the pawn shop. The broad at the pawn had dug up another, this time with a controller and the power cord. She swapped it with me, and I picked up a few titles from the stash that came in with the deck. It turns out that the one from K-Mart was busted, so I returned that one and got my money back.
So in the span of three days, I'd been in possession of three different Saturns, where I had not a single one before. Two went back where they came from. Now I have exactly one, and one is plenty.

- Notes
- Jeez. Not a bad day after taking a two-month break from hunting. I'm totally amazed that someone didn't beat me to the 2600 stuff. I strolled into the store, wandered over to the TV area, and there was a bigass bag with sixty one carts, all neatly stacked with the titles visible. I wasn't keen on the idea of shucking out the skins for it just to get a Mr. Do. Then I noticed the Rubik's Cube. Gimme gimme gimme.

- Nice batch of Emerson Arcadia! All evidence suggests that the console had never been removed from its packaging, and all the carts were still shrinkwrapped. Can you guess what comes next? That's right! I took the console out to check it out, and it's busted. Hours of disassembly and shotgun diagnosis indicated that the CPU is fried. Now tell me where the fuck I'm supposed to get a replacement Signetics 2650 processor to restore this beauty? God damn, I hate Emerson. Bunch of fucknuts.
Plundered Hearts is sure out of place on a list of cartridges for dedicated game consoles, but I really dig Infocom games.

- Notes
- I got the computer and cards strictly for cannibalizing parts. Right now, they've already been stripped down to their most essential components.
The TeleCaption II unit, on the other hand, is damn useful. More than just a closed-caption decoder, it's a cable box complete with freakin RF and A/V inputs and outputs. I had my doubts that a piece of TV equipment from 1986 would be able to handle 70+ cable channels, but it does. Fits perfectly atop a Commodore 1702 monitor.

- Notes
- Some asshole kids had torn the labels off most all these and replaced them with a patchwork of pieces cut from a Tyco radio-controlled car manual. All I could really notice about them without tearing open the bag (the thrift employee wouldn't let me) was that the labels weren't like anythng I'd seen before. Ah, well. For five bucks, I was willing to gamble. At least now I have an ample supply of "project cases."

- Man. That's a lot of shit for one day.
The 2600 setup was a neat find. It came in this spiffy plastic carrying case like the ones video rental stores use for current systems. Tailor-made for holding a 2600 with accessories and eight carts. The carts that came with it were neat too, not for their rarities but for their spectacular condition. Not a single blemish on any of the labels.

- Sony Trinitron multistandard monitor, model PVM-1271Q. This thing is mean . You can hook up and select among two composite signals, RGB, VTR, and CMPTR. The composite and RGB lines have also have outputs. The VTR and CMPTR connectors aren't quite as simple as the regular BNC connectors for everything else, but they shouldn't be a major hassle. To top it all off, it can handle all the major video standards: NTSC, PAL, SECAM, and NTSC 4.43 (whatever that is). There's a sticker on the back proclaiming "FOR COMMERCIAL USE ONLY." No duh. A normal consumer wouldn't have a clue what to do with this monster, and apparently the thrift store didn't either. Definitely worth more than the $20 I paid for it.

- Commodore 1702 Monitor. My third. Woohoo! The thrift didn't mean to sell it. It was originally bundled with a C=64 setup priced at $75, then they decided the monitor would be good for demonstrating VCR's, but I caught a guy who didn't have a clue. He stuck a $10 price tag on it for me, and I hightailed it out of there before anybody could catch me. Lesson: put a 'NFS' sticker on anything you don't want sold. Bwahaha!

Seven new R's and two ER's, including all seven of the original Starpath games; I only wish I could have found the Supercharger. A good day by most anyone's standard. My best in months. Only a couple of the carts had any defects at all in their labels, and darn near every one had a manual. Somebody sure must have liked their Atari to have taken such good care of their carts. All seven Starpath games were in the case with the normal carts instead of in the basket with regular audio tapes. We all know how rare it is to find a thrift store whose employees have that sort of acumen, but to make it even better, their perspicacity didn't cost me anything extra. All a buck apiece. Bwahaha!
And I finally replaced the copy of Masters of the Universe I "traded" to Curt Charlton--aka skeletor on IRC. Now if I could only find a copy of Lost Luggage, which he was supposed to have sent me. The little asshole rat bastard fucker. (grumble grumble)
