Subject: FYI: Dragon's Lair Display Fix Date: Tue, 07 Oct 1997 23:35:21 -0600 From: Jess Askey Newsgroups: rec.games.video.arcade.collecting Hi All, This problem had never been addressed on the newsgroup before (I did a search on it on Dejanews and came up with nothing so Im basically just posting this here so it gets put in the archive. Problem: Apparently there is a design problem for the display controller IC's in Dragon's Lair games. It seems to be more prevalent on the player 1 display and on the 'lives' displays on both players. Once the game powers up there are very dim "F's" in all the digits of the affected displays. Solution: The problem arises from the 'enable' line on the display controllers being falsely triggered by noise on the line. This was also a problem on some Dart games. The fix involves adding two resistors from the 'enable' line to the +5V and Ground respectively to stablize the line and prevent false triggering. You can do this to both controller IC's on the board or just the one that is causing the problems. Looking at the back of the board. Take 2 1K ohm resistors. Run one from Pin 28 (+5V) to Pin 9 (enable). Run the other from Pin 7 (Ground) to Pin 9 as well. Thanks go to Mike Treu for getting this out of Star Tech Journal and sending it to me. enjoy! :-) jess -- Jess M.
